'A disgrazzia. In Italy this is the number people avoid, not thirteen, and the Smorfia says it without beating around the bush: seventeen is misfortune. But notice how tradition treats it — in Naples misfortune is named precisely so it won’t be left without a name. Things said out loud are less frightening than things kept quiet, and here that principle holds for grief, for illness and for bad luck. In dreams, seventeen doesn’t announce anything.
