Dreaming of a boat at seventy-six

My grandfather bought a boat at seventy-six. He’d wanted one his whole life, and his whole life he couldn’t afford it. When he finally got it, the doctor had already told him to stay out of the sun. He keeps it moored and goes down early on Sunday mornings, with his hat on, and sits in the stern without starting the engine. He says it’s enough for him to hear the water lapping underneath.
