The forgotten loan

Years ago a neighbor lent me some money without my even asking. He never brought it up, and when I paid him back he waved his hand as if shooing away a fly. He died last winter. At the wake his daughter told me she knew nothing about it. And I realized that he didn’t remember it anymore either, while I’ve been carrying it around for eleven years.
