'O ciuccio porta 'a paglia e 'o ciuccio se l'ammocca
The donkey carries the straw, and the donkey eats it too.
What it means
Whoever does everything alone ends up paying the price too.
A story
The kiosk and the lost laughter
A friend of mine opened a kiosk and didn’t want anyone helping him. He does the shopping, opens up, serves, cleans, closes and does the books. In July he took a day off and closed; the next day three customers asked him if he’d been sick. He told me about it laughing, while he washed the glasses, and then he stopped for a moment with his hands in the water and didn’t laugh anymore.
The Smorfia
