On an online newspaper page I started replying to a guy who was spouting nonsense. I wrote three long replies, with facts and figures. Every time, he answered with one line and an emoji. At eleven thirty at night I was still at it, phone in hand and the light off, thinking about my fourth reply. My wife turned over in bed and asked if I was working.
